NBC to Prune Daytime Programs: A long-time No. 3 in the daytime ratings race, NBC confirmed trade reports that beginning next fall it would cut back its daytime programming to 4 1/2 hours from 5 1/2 hours. “The daytime marketplace has changed,” said John Damiano, senior vice president of affiliate relations at NBC. “The most successful shows now are talk shows and infotainment.” He would not say what shows would be canceled but indicated the afternoon soap operas would remain intact. NBC has been mulling plans to alter its daytime for several months and has several news magazine-type programs in the wings. He said not enough affiliates were carrying the morning game shows to attract advertising.
