HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Rancho Buena Vista Topples Escondido

Top-ranked Rancho Buena Vista High, which lost its first three boys’ basketball games this season to tough teams from Orange County and Los Angeles counties, busted out in a big way over Escondido High in the first round of the Lt. James Mitchell Tournament at Torrey Pines High.

The Longhorns won, 107-75, behind 45 points by Brad Grubaugh and 24 points by Darryl Parker.

Grubaugh, who added five assists and five steals, had 31 points by halftime. The Longhorns took a 35-12 lead after eight minutes and a 64-36 lead at the half.

James Vanderveur added 10 points. Damian Cephas and Mike Frank each had 13 points for Escondido.

In other Mitchell tournament games

De La Salle 67, Torrey Pines 46--Torrey Pines suffered its first loss of the season and De La Salle of Concord improved to 6-1. Danny Reynaga led Torrey Pines with 16 points and five assists. Craig Brown added 13. For De La Salle, Joe McLean finished with 21 points and teammate Drew Barry, son of former Golden State Warrior great Rick Barry, added 19.

Vista 85, Trabuco Hills 84--Vista had a 12-point lead at halftime, raised it to 15 after three quarters and then watched as Trabuco Hills started scoring from the inside, eventually tying the game with less than 20 seconds remaining.

With seven seconds to play, however, Vista’s Jason Barnes, who was seven of nine from the line and finished with nine points, hit a free-throw to nullify Trabuco Hills’ comeback bid at San Dieguito.

Trabuco Hills did get off a final desperation shot, but it bounced off the front of the rim.

Fallbrook 71, West Anchorage 67--Allen Chatman scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter to lift Fallbrook, which trailed by three after three quarters at San Dieguito. Also for Fallbrook, Chris Miller scored 20 and Allen Yang had 13. Jamarcus Stewart hit six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 28 points for West Anchorage.

San Dieguito 68, Orange Glen 61--San Dieguito led, 26-8, after the first quarter at home, then held off a steady rush by Orange Glen. Matt de la Pena scored 33 points and Sean Howard 15 for the Mustangs (2-2). Steve Schofield had 23 points for Orange Glen.

Newport Harbor 78, Oceanside 39--Newport Harbor had four players in double figures: Justin McIntee, 21; Hui Nguyen, 13; Mike Stipe, 12; and Mark McAnlis, 10.

San Clemente 71, Las Vegas 49--Las Vegas’s Tracy Mott led all scorers with 21 points at Carlsbad, but San Clemente had four players in double figures: Eddie Morgan, 16; Melvin Johnson, 13; Robert Moore, 12; and Marcus Guild, 10.

Dana Hills 51, Carlsbad 42--Derek Walsh scored 17 and teammate Keith Barnett added 14 to lead Dana Point. Carlsbad had no players reach double figures.

Metro Conference

Castle Park 90, Bonita Vista 78--Bobby Stanton scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, was nine of 10 from the free-throw line and hit three three-pointers to lead Castle Park (3-3, 2-1). He was not the team’s leading scorer. Benji Gil was with 29. Teammate Eric Bell threw in 25. Bonita Vista fell to 6-2, 2-1.

Southwest 74, Hilltop 66--Roger Galang and Zachary Reiff each scored 16 points to lead Southwest (4-4, 2-1). Hilltop’s Courtney Brown led all scorers with 28 points and teammate Chris White added 21.

Chula Vista 81, Montgomery 46--Chula Vista (5-3, 3-1) had four players in double figures: Jerome, Green 22; Shane Howell, 14; Andy Duran, 11; and Don Edwards, 10. Miguel Quinones pulled down nine rebounds.

Kiwanis Tournament At Serra

Lincoln 85, Mission Bay 72--Barry Randle helped Lincoln even its record at 4-4 by scoring 32 points. Hosea Baker added 15. John Price led Mission Bay (1-5) with 22 and teammate Cam Attwood added 16.

Point Loma 56, La Jolla 51--After beginning the third period tied at 39, Point Loma went on to outscore La Jolla, 17-12, in the fourth quarter for its first victory of the season. Point Loma (1-8) was led by Justin Miller’s 16 points and Eric Loper and Beitrich Baker, each of whom finished with 11 points. David Alexander had 13 for La Jolla.

Poway 77, Hoover 54--Kyle Milling with 20 points led four Titans in double-figure scoring as Poway outscored Hoover in every quarter. Bill Rarity had 13 points, Matt Fletcher 12 and Frank Garrett 11 for Poway.

Mt. Carmel 71, Serra 64--Mt. Carmel led just, 65-62, with 1:30 remaining before pulling away. Ryan Wootton led the way with 32 points for the Sundevils (6-0). Tony Etheridge had 20 points and Antwand Harris 16 for Serra (3-4).

Nonleague

USDHS 77, Mira Mesa 65--USDHS won at the free throw line. The Dons outscored Mira Mesa (5-4) by 21 points at the free throw line, 28-7. USDHS (5-2) had only one basket in the fourth quarter, but made up for it by making 15 free throws.

La Jolla Country Day 57, Marian 49--Jason Boyle had 17 points to lead LJCD (6-3) at Marian. Joe Lagula scored 16 for Marian (9-5).

Girls

University City 58, San Dieguito 56--Charlotte Kornik made two free throws with less than 30 seconds left to give University City the margin of victory in a nonleague game. Kornik finished with a game-high 29 points. Mary Silverman of San Dieguito finished with 27 points, including five three-pointers.

Point Loma 52, Grossmont 39--Lisa Griego had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Stacy Wainwright 11 points and nine rebounds to lead Point Loma (6-1). Lori Radondo had 11 points, including three three-pointers for Grossmont.
