The Padres have agreed to move their final spring-training game April 7 against the Seattle Mariners to Portland, Ore., site of the Minnesota Twins’ triple-A club. The official announcement is expected next week.
The Padres originally were to complete their exhibition season with a three-game series in Las Vegas. They now will play night games April 5 and April 6 in Las Vegas against the Mariners and then, at the request of the Mariners, fly to Portland for the finale.
They open the regular season against the San Francisco Giants April 9 at 7:35 p.m. at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
In other news, Dixie College of St. George, Utah, announced it will honor one of its most famous graduates Monday--Padre pitcher Bruce Hurst. The school will unveil a life-size bronze statue of Hurst and break ground on a $3 million baseball complex named Hurst Field.
Several of Hurst’s friends and former Boston Red Sox teammates also are expected to be at the ceremony: Roger Clemens, Marty Barrett, Dane Iorg, Vance Law, Vernon Law and Kelly Downs.
