Teacher Aides Threaten Strike Over Insurance

Teacher assistants in Los Angeles said Friday that they will go on strike Nov. 27 unless they reach a contract agreement with the school district.
The teaching assistants, who last year unionized by joining Service Employees International Union Local 99, are asking for a contract guaranteeing them enough hours to qualify for health benefits. There are 10,000 teaching assistants in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
District officials contend that budget difficulties limit their flexibility in meeting the union’s demands.
