Jimmy Ward, popular right wing with the defunct Montreal Maroons of the NHL, died of cancer in Portland, Ore. He was 84.
Ward, a 12-year NHL veteran, was a member of the Maroons’ Stanley Cup champions in 1935. He retired in 1939 after suffering a shoulder injury while playing with the Canadiens.
Ward scored 274 points and had 147 goals.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at Ross Memorial in Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be sent to Hospice, 6040 N. Cutter Circle, Suite 309, Portland, Ore. 97217. Hospice is an organization of visiting nurses who help terminally ill patients suffering from cancer.
