NEW DELHI — New Indian Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar won a vote of confidence for his minority government in the lower house of Parliament today.
Chandra Shekhar won by a generous margin with the support of Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress-I party, the largest in India’s fragmented Parliament.
Chandra Shekhar leads barely 1/10th of the 524 members of the lower house after splitting the Janata Dal party of former Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh before Singh’s defeat in a confidence vote two weeks ago.
He won today’s vote 269 to 204. There were 15 abstentions and 36 members were absent.
The win with the support of Gandhi’s party will allow Gandhi to dictate the timing of early polls.
