Phone Firms on Alert for Hackers: Telephone companies were told that computer hackers may try to disrupt telephone communications today, company officials said. Where the disruptions may occur was unknown, except the attacks would be against computer programs and routines, not against physical facilities. The threat was believed connected to the recent sentencing in Atlanta of three members of a hackers’ group called Legion of Doom. The three pleaded guilty earlier this year in connection with break-ins of BellSouth Corp. computers.
