A 62-year-old San Diego man was killed Thursday when the small plane he was piloting experienced engine failure and crashed just west of the runway at Gillespie Field in El Cajon, authorities said.
Robert Frank Currier, who was alone in the plane, lived on University Avenue in Hillcrest, according to the coroner’s office.
Currier was airborne when he attempted to return to the field, the spokesman said. The crash was reported at 2:11 p.m., and 22 firefighters from El Cajon and Santee responded, in addition to one paramedic unit.
