Sailors Top Estancia With Big First Half

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior quarterback Steve Walker completed 10 of 17 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead Newport Harbor High School to a 31-7 victory over Estancia Friday night at Newport Harbor.

Marc Tagliaferri, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound running back, added 105 yards and a touchdown in 13 carries for the Sailors (4-1).

Newport Harbor broke the game open with 2:42 left in the first half when Walker hit senior tight end George Greenwalt with a 25-yard touchdown pass. Josh Klein’s extra point made it 14-7 Newport Harbor. On the next series, junior linebacker Darin Mangnall recovered a fumble at the Estancia 17-yard line. Two plays later, Walker and junior wide receiver Branon Coluccio teamed on a four-yard touchdown pass with 1:26 left in the half.

Klein added a 44-yard field goal as time ran out in the half to give Newport Harbor a 24-7 lead.

Estancia (1-4) scored its only touchdown with 6:41 left in the half on a third-and-eight at the Newport Harbor 22-yard line. Senior running back David Hong caught a pass from sophomore quarterback Matt Johner at the Eagle 35, broke two tackles and ran 78 yards for the touchdown.
