Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies evacuated about 30 Santa Clarita residents Friday from an apartment complex the deputies believed was occupied by an armed man who had injured his wife and infant son.
But when the Sheriff’s Department special weapons team entered the complex in the 27500 block of Sierra Highway about four hours later, the man’s apartment was empty, Deputy Mary Landreth said.
“I didn’t mind. These things happen. They’ve got to take all the precautions,” said a resident of the three-story complex, who was evacuated but asked not to be identified.
Sheriff’s deputies Friday were still seeking one of the apartment residents, Anthony Vargas, 35, on suspicion of spousal abuse and child endangerment, Landreth said.
