WORLD : Athens Fights to Pierce Smog
ATHENS — The government barred private automobiles from downtown Athens for five hours today and advised the sick and elderly to stay home as smog enshrouded the city.
Buses, taxis and delivery vehicles were exempt from the ban aimed at containing record air pollution levels over the last few days.
Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis, who called an emergency meeting with Environment Ministry officials, was expected to announce new measures to meet the crisis.
High temperatures and lack of wind have exacerbated existing smog conditions, driving hundreds to hospitals with heart and breathing complaints.
