ROUGH WATER SWIM : Swimmers’ Rite to Make Quite a Splash

The 60th annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim kicks off at 10 a.m. this Sunday at the La Jolla Cove. More than 1,300 swimmers ranging from 12 to 80 years old are expected to compete.
La Jolla’s Rough Water Swim has been a summer tradition for the past several decades and is considered to be one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in the country. Sunday’s attendance promises to rival last year’s as many past winners will return to defend their titles.
The first event is the Junior Swim, where boys and girls 12 years and over follow a 250-yard triangular course starting and finishing at La Jolla Cove. At noon, a 1-mile amateur event for swimmers 12 years and over will be held.
At 1 p.m., the Masters Men Swim begins, following a 1-mile triangular course. The Masters Women Swim, for women 19 years and over, starts at 2:15 p.m. and follows the same 1-mile course.
Because of the natural arena-like characteristics of the La Jolla Cove, spectators have a good view of all the events. An awards ceremony follows the competition.
