Alan Kulwicki won his first pole position of the season, edging Bill Elliott in qualifying at the NASCAR Champion Spark Plug 400 at the Michigan International Speedway at Brooklyn, Mich.
Kulwicki, one of the last drivers to make a qualifying run on the high-banked oval, turned a lap at 174.982 m.p.h.
Elliott wound up on the outside of the all-Ford Thunderbird front row with a speed of 174.482.
In a support race, Tracy Leslie won the ARCA Michigan 200 stock car race, ending a 13-month winless period.
