World IN BRIEF : PAKISTAN : Bhutto’s Party Seeks Caretaker Regime

Ousted Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party demanded a new impartial caretaker government to ensure fair elections. The PPP passed the resolution at a party meeting in Islamabad after Bhutto vowed in a speech to fight back following her sacking by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. The party also rejected the decision of Prime Minister Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi’s government to set up special tribunals to try members of Bhutto’s government on corruption charges. Ishaq Khan dismissed Bhutto’s 20-month-old government on Aug. 6, accusing it of abuse of power and corruption.
