Robert J. Schmorleitz; Attorney Defended Unitarian Church

Robert J. Schmorleitz, 77, an attorney who represented the First Unitarian Church when its nonprofit status was jeopardized during the anti-communist investigations of the 1950s. Schmorleitz went to court to help the church keep its nonprofit status after Unitarian leaders refused to sign a loyalty oath declaring that they weren’t communists. Schmorleitz received his law degree from Southwestern University in Los Angeles and after World War II service in the Merchant Marine set up a private law practice in North Hollywood. In Los Angeles on July 26 of cancer.
