LOCAL : Thousands of Squid Wash Ashore

Thousands of dead squid lured north by unusually warm waters washed up on south Orange County beaches today, apparently stranded while searching for prey, marine biologists said.
The creatures, up to 20 pounds in weight and 4 feet in length, originated in waters off Mexico, California Fish and Game officials said. They called the beach stranding a naturally occurring event that happens about every 10 years in Southern California.
The squid washed ashore on beaches between Monarch Bay in Laguna Beach to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. Marine biologists and Fish and Game officials are to inspect and remove the squid.
Beach-goers said the squid began washing ashore Thursday night.
