World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Police Defuse Bomb; 8 Killed in Unrest
- Share via
Police defused a powerful bomb in a parking garage under offices of the military in Pretoria but do not know whether it was planted by rightists or leftists. Police also reported eight people were killed and 127 arrested in political unrest across South Africa, including four people killed in rioting in the sprawling black township of Kayelitsha on the outskirts of Cape Town. Discovery of the bomb in Pretoria followed a spate of suspected right-wing bomb attacks in recent weeks in retaliation for President Frederik W. de Klerk’s racial reform initiatives.
