A pedestrian, possibly an undocumented immigrant, was run down by at least one hit-and-run vehicle and killed late Friday along Interstate 5 near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego, authorities said.
He was struck in a zone where dozens of undocumented pedestrians have been killed in recent years. A network of high-speed roadways forms a barrier for those who have made unauthorized crossings into San Diego from Tijuana.
State authorities have placed flashing signs in the area, warning motorists of people crossing the road unexpectedly, but the fatalities continue to mount.
The latest victim was identified only as Jose Toribo Barrales. His age and address were unknown.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m., at a spot along I-5 just north of the California 905 intersection.
The California Highway Patrol was investigating.
