NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Dimitrios I, spiritual leader of 250 million Eastern Orthodox Christians, visited Niagara Falls as part of his monthlong tour of the United States.
The 75-year-old patriarch leaned against a railing Wednesday and gazed at Horseshoe Falls.
Dimitrios I did not mention the falls in either of his public addresses in Upstate New York. But American Orthodox leaders said visiting the cataract had been his dream since childhood.
“All the Europeans, they dream someday to see these phenomena,” said Bishop Timotheos of Detroit, whose diocese includes Upstate New York.
Later in the day the patriarch went to Boston, the final stop on the first U.S. visit by a holder of his office. Dimitrios I has sought to bridge the gap between the Greek and other national Orthodox churches in the United States.
