Airlines: USAir Group, based in Arlington, Va., posted a quarterly loss of $75 million, contrasted with profit of $101 million in the second quarter of 1989. Revenue was $1.71 billion, down slightly from a year ago. The carrier blamed weakness in the nation’s economy for the results. Phoenix-based America West posted second-quarter earnings of $6.14 million, almost double its profit in the 1989 period. Revenue rose 37% to $326 million. The results reflect a major improvement over the first quarter of the year, when the airline reported a net loss of $2.6 million. The company said much of the improvement was because of a substantial drop in fuel costs and an increase in passenger miles.
