E. German Spy Posed as W. Berlin Waiter to Listen In on Reagan

WEST BERLIN — An East German spy posing as a waiter served former President Ronald Reagan and used a secret infrared device to beam intelligence reports across the Berlin Wall, a West Berlin newspaper said today.
The Berliner Morgenpost, quoting security authorities, said the 58-year-old man, now under arrest, worked for a service firm hired regularly by West Berlin’s Senate to cater official receptions.
Among prominent guests on whom he eavesdropped were Reagan, who visited West Berlin as President in 1982 and 1987, West German President Richard von Weizsaecker and the military governors of the three Western allies in Berlin.
Police searching the suspect’s house on the Western side of the Berlin Wall discovered a device for transmitting infrared beams to East Berlin’s Ministry of State Security.
