Suspected gang members in a small foreign-made car shot a Pomona boy Monday and then chased the wounded youth into an alley where they opened fire again, killing him and peppering a nearby apartment house with bullets, authorities said.
Rudy Romero Castro, 16, was hit in the first round of gunfire about 4 p.m. and was fleeing down 12th Street when he fell, Pomona Police Officer Duane Leonard said.
The gunmen then shot the youth again and sprayed the apartment building, in the 1100 block of South Thomas Street, narrowly missing residents who had gathered outside because of the heat, Leonard said.
Romero Castro died where he fell. It was not known if he belonged to a gang, police said.
The gunmen escaped.
