THE SIDELINES : Ex-Jet Gastineau on Waivers

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Former New York Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau has been placed on waivers by the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Under CFL rules, if the 33-year-old Gastineau clears waivers today the Lions can place him on their practice roster. Because of Gastineau’s large personal services contract with Lions owner Murray Pezim, it’s unlikely that another CFL team will claim him.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Gastineau signed with British Columbia on June 13. He reported to training camp with a badly sprained ankle and was also slowed by an infected knee.

Gastineau started in British Columbia’s first two regular-season games. He was ejected in the Lions’ opener against the Calgary Stampeders on July 13 after a wild, helmet-swinging brawl on the way to the dressing room at halftime.
