Jaromir Jagr has unexpectedly left Czechoslovakia to join the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he didn’t notify Czech hockey officials he was leaving.
Jagr, an 18-year-old right wing who was selected by the Penguins in the first round of the NHL draft June 16, is under contract to play one more season for his Czech club, Poldi Kladno, but the Penguins will ask the NHL to nullify the contract because he signed it before he was an adult. He and his mother, Anna, arrived in Pittsburgh months ahead of schedule.
