CIRCUS : Big Top Beckons
The magic of the circus comes to Carlsbad’s Magee Park on Sunday as the Make-a-Circus theater troupe strives to out-flip, out-clown and out-juggle each other in a free performance for the whole family. The vaudeville-like circus begins at noon and is sponsored by the city of Carlsbad Arts Office.
Accompanied by a four-piece jazz band, the 16-member Make-a-Circus troupe will perform a show that includes acrobatics, clowning, magic and an aerial high-wire act. This year’s story, “The Mouth That Roared,” tells the tale of a group of students competing in a “coolness” contest.
Following the performance, the troupe will break for an hour and teach the audience minor circus skills, such as tumbling and walking on short stilts. After the intermission, a second show will be performed, this time including the audience.
Based in San Francisco, Make-a-Circus has been giving free circus performances in California parks for the past 15 years. The troupe is known for its rapport with audiences, particularly children.
