NEW ORLEANS — Rep. Lindy Boggs (D-La.) reportedly will not seek reelection to the congressional seat she and her late husband have held for 46 years.
Boggs, 74, is expected to announce her decision Friday.
She has been under increasing emotional and physical strain because of the illness of her elder daughter, Barbara Sigmund, friends of the family say. The daughter, mayor of Princeton, N.J., is suffering from cancer.
Boggs’ Washington office refused to comment on the reports in the New Orleans media. Earlier this week, Boggs said, “When I make up my mind positively, I’ll certainly let everyone know.”
She assumed the post in March, 1973, after winning a special election to succeed her husband, Hale, the powerful House majority leader whose plane disappeared during a flight over Alaska six months earlier.
