WORLD : 7 More Soviet Parliamentarians Drop Out of Communist Party

MOSCOW — Seven more members of the Soviet Parliament announced today that they were quitting the Communist Party.
The seven lawmakers said they were dropping out of the party “to facilitate the process of democratizing the country.”
The current wave of defections follows Boris N. Yeltsin’s announcement last week to the party’s 28th Congress that he was quitting the party.
Other prominent dropouts in recent days have been Moscow Mayor Gavriil Popov and Leningrad Mayor Anatoly Sobchak. Moscow and Leningrad are the country’s largest cities.
The seven departing lawmakers were Sergei Stankevich, one of the leaders of the party’s progressive Democratic Platform wing; Vladimir Tikhonov, leader of the cooperative small business movement; environmentalist Alexei Yablokov; journalist Valentin Logunov; scientist Yuri Ryzhov; economist Alexei Yemelyanov, and factory manager Mikhail Bocharov.
