WORLD IN BRIEF : SOVIET UNION : Ethnic Violence Strikes Kirghizia

New ethnic clashes have broken out in the Soviet Central Asian republic of Kirghizia, injuring at least 21 people, the official Tass news agency said. Tass reported that police clubbed rioters and fired warning shots to break up the fighting in the region around Osh, the republic’s second-largest city. In early June, the area was the center of ethnic violence in which more than 100 people died.
