Michael Andretti finished the qualifying session at the New Jersey Meadowlands with the provisional pole for Sunday’s Marlboro Grand Prix, despite the failure of the Chevrolet engine in his Lola race car.

Andretti’s lap of 114.401 m.p.h. fell short of Emerson Fittipaldi’s track qualifying record of 115.541 set last year. Rick Mears was second at 113.771 in a Penske 90 Chevrolet. Mario Andretti, Michael’s father and teammate, was third at 113.221.
