Jonsson Beats Perez-Roldan in Sweden

Top-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina had been picked to meet Mats Wilander in the finals of the Swedish Open, a clay-court event.

It won’t happen.

Lars Jonsson, ranked 115th in the world, beat Perez-Roldan, ranked 21st, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in the second round Wednesday.

Wilander advanced past Johan Anderson of Australia in the first round on Tuesday.

It was Jonsson’s second consecutive victory over Perez-Roldan. Last year, Jonsson beat Perez-Roldan after trailing, 0-5, in the third set in a tournament.

French Open champion Andres Gomez of Ecuador squandered five match points in the second set and was beaten by Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round of the Swiss Open at Gstaad, Switzerland.

Gomez had two set points at 5-3 in the second set and three more at 5-4, but blew each opportunity.

American Jim Courier, seeded fifth, beat Austria’s Horst Skoff, 6-3, 6-3.

Three days after winning the Wimbledon championship, Stefan Edberg had to struggle to beat American Tommy Ho, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, in the first round of the Gunze World tournament at Osaka, Japan.

Stacey Martin won 12 of the last 15 games for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 second-round victory over Terry Phelps in the Mt. Cranmore tournament at Conway, N.H.

Martin, 19, will meet 14-year-old Jennifer Capriati in Friday’s quarterfinals.
