NATION : Army to Close 50 ROTC Units

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Army will close 50 ROTC units on university campuses nationwide as part of long-range reductions in the budget and the demand for new officers, Secretary of the Army Michael P. W. Stone said.
The demand for new officers will decrease in coming years as the Army reduces its size and changes its role in American life, Stone said Monday in a speech to the World Affairs Council of Oregon.
“We can’t afford to keep them open any more because we don’t need the officers in the smaller service,” he said.
Stone did not indicate which schools’ programs would be cut, but after the speech he said the cuts will affect every state with Reserve Officer Training Corps programs. He said some reductions involve consolidating extension centers on smaller campuses into the larger host programs on larger campuses.
