Board to Discuss Goals for Student Achievement

The Los Angeles school board will hold a special meeting at 2 p.m. next Monday to discuss setting specific goals to improve the academic achievement of students at all the district’s 600 schools.
Supt. Leonard Britton has proposed that each school try each year to increase by 7% the number of students achieving above the 40th percentile on national standardized tests, until schools meet state targets and national norms for student achievement.
His plan also calls for a 10% increase in the number of ninth-graders enrolled in algebra, and a 15% increase in the number who pass the course. At next Monday’s meeting the board will discuss whether the goals are appropriate, how strategies for meeting them will be devised, what consequences will be attached to the plan and how to fund it.
