Garrison, Leach Combine to Win Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Title

LONDON — Zina Garrison, beaten by Martina Navratilova in the women’s singles final, had the consolation of winning the mixed doubles at Wimbledon Sunday. She and Laguna Beach’s Rick Leach, the third-seeded team, defeated fourth-seeded Liz Smylie and John Fitzgerald of Australia, 7-5, 6-2.
Garrison lost, 6-4, 6-1, to Navratilova Saturday.
Leach and Jim Pugh of Palos Verdes took the men’s doubles title Saturday with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) victory over South Africans Pieter Aldrich and Danie Visser.
The women’s doubles went for the second successive year to Czechoslovakia’s Helena Sukova and Jana Novotna, who beat Smylie and American Kathy Jordan, 6-3, 6-4, Saturday.
