World IN BRIEF : WEST GERMANY : Firms Implicated in Iraq Cannon Plant

From Times staff and Wire reports

Leading West German firms help to build an Iraqi weapons factory where a giant cannon was to be made, the Hamburg-based news magazine Der Spiegel said. The weekly said “confiscated documents” showed that the factory near Baghdad was designed to produce guns. Experts feared that it was also where a cannon with a barrel about 150 yards long and with a range of 600 miles was to be built. Britain and other West European countries have confiscated shipments suspected of being parts for an Iraqi supergun that could hit Israel.
