Hometown Welcomes Explorer of Antarctic

ELY, Minn. — Antarctic explorer Will Steger got a rousing welcome home Saturday from nearly all of the 4,289 residents of his hometown in the north woods.
“Incredible,” was Steger’s only reaction after thousands showered him with confetti and good wishes during a parade through the tiny business district.
The 45-year-old explorer left Ely last July to serve as co-leader of the six-member International Trans-Antarctica Expedition, the longest unmechanized passage across the frozen continent.
After the parade Steger posed for pictures and signed autographs--on paper and on the clothes on some people’s backs.
