WORLD : Crowd Kills White in S. Africa

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — A crowd of blacks dragged a white man from his car and beat him to death today after he drove into them and killed four people, South African police said.
“We’re not sure why he collided with the crowd. If he was afraid he was going to be attacked or not, we’re not sure,” a police spokesman said.
Police later fired tear gas to disperse the crowd of 18,000 blacks who had gathered to protest increased bus fares in a rural area north of the capital, Pretoria.
