WORLD IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Rivals Agree to End Killing of Civilians

Liberian government and rebel delegations met in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and agreed to an appeal from Liberia’s religious leaders to end attacks on civilians. A joint statement signed by both sides made no reference to church leaders’ request for an immediate cease-fire in the civil war. More than 1,000 people have been killed, many of them civilians, since the rebel National Patriotic Front moved into Liberia from the Ivory Coast on Dec. 24 and began a drive on Monrovia, the Liberian capital.
