WORLD IN BRIEF : IRAN : Security Force to Merge With 2 Units

Parliament voted to merge Iran’s internal security force, the Islamic Revolutionary Komitehs, with other urban and paramilitary rural police to battle an insurgency and drug-trafficking in the border area with Pakistan. The action was opposed by some conservative members who said it was designed to dissolve the Komitehs, created after the 1979 revolution partly to safeguard the government against counterrevolutionary elements.
