WORLD IN BRIEF : POLAND : Unemployment Up, May Triple by 1991

Polish unemployment is growing faster than the government forecast, and the number of jobless could double or triple by the end of the year, a Polish official said. The number of registered jobless as of May 31 jumped by more than 25% to 443,222, or 3.3% of the work force, Deputy Labor Minister Jerzy Szreter said. April’s figure was 351,000. Before introducing austerity measures on Jan. 1, the government was prepared to face up to 400,000 people without jobs by the end of the year.
