SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Corona Del Mar Wins on Doubles

The doubles teams helped Corona del Mar High School beat host Loyola, 10-8, in a Southern Section 4-A second-round tennis match Tuesday at the South Pasadena Tennis Center.
Ken Alston and Marshall Solomon, Corona del Mar’s No. 1 doubles team, swept their sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, and Scott Pannier and Trenton Rhodes, the Sea Kings’ No. 2 team, swept, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. Corona del Mar (22-2) will play Dana Hills, a 12-6 winner over Newport Harbor, in Thursday’s semifinals.
In 3-A matches:
Woodbridge 15, Glendale 3--Top-seeded Woodbridge (20-3) advanced to the semifinals with an easy victory at home. Eric Berg, the Warriors’ No. 1 singles player, swept his sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Darren Isaacman and Victory Ro, Woodbridge’s No. 1 doubles team, swept their sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-4.
Laguna Beach 10, Redlands 8--Host Laguna Beach got key victories from Julian Zajfen at No. 3 singles and Adam Donner and Jayson Tonkon at No. 3 doubles to take a 4-2 lead after the first round and held on to win. It was the first loss for Redlands (20-1). Jon Leach, Laguna Beach’s No. 1 singles player, swept his sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, to improve his record to 60-0 this season.
In a 1-A match:
Santa Margarita 12, Yucaipa 6--Sean Crafts swept his sets at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Santa Margarita into the semifinals. Jeff Larson and Kevin Cimini, the Eagles’ No. 1 doubles team, won two of three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5. Santa Margarita (16-3) plays Brentwood, a winner over Bellflower, Thursday.
