Rain (AMC Sunday at 9 p.m.): Joan Crawford accepted the verdict of the critics and the public that she was a lousy Sadie Thompson in Lewis Milestone’s 1932 version of the steamy Somerset Maugham tale, but the film is terrific and so is Crawford’s Sadie, immensely vulnerable beneath a tough, flashy exterior. Over the Edge (A&E; Monday at 1 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m.): Jonathan Kaplan’s excellent 1979 drama focuses on the juvenile vandalism rampant in affluent but raw new suburbs, those communities where everything is supposedly planned--except for kids. Among the film’s troubled teen-agers are Andy Romano, Matt Dillon, Vincent Spano and Tom Fergus. (1:35)

1984 (KTTV Wednesday at 2:30 a.m.): Enough of what George Orwell predicted in his 1949 novel has come true to make writer-director Michael Radford’s inspired adaptation chillingly convincing. This 1984--yes, the year’s the same as the title--production also provided a fine screen valedictory for Richard Burton, in one of his finest screen portrayals as the very embodiment of evil, spirit-crushing intellect. John Hurt stars as the ill-fated Winston Smith. (2:30)
