SOUTHERN SECTION BASEBALL PLAYOFFS : Sonora Gives; Anaheim Takes 10-9 Win

Until the final out Tuesday, the Division 4-A wild-card game between Anaheim and Sonora High schools was up for the taking--or giving.

“We gave them the walks, and they gave us the errors,” Anaheim Coach Dave Torres said.

Anaheim pulled out a 10-9 victory at Sonora, hanging on despite a four-run rally by Sonora in the seventh inning.

Anaheim relief ace Craig Rivette gave up two runs in the inning, including a two-out RBI double by Richard Ybarra that pulled the Raiders to within a run.

But Rivette got Sonora’s Tracy Coffman to fly out to shallow center field with the bases loaded to earn his eighth save.

Anaheim pitchers walked eight batters, but right-hander Pete Gonzales (4-2) got the victory in relief of starter Robert Fernandez.

The Colonists (16-9-1) move on to a first-round game at fourth-seeded Upland (21-4) Friday.

Sonora (12-13) collected 14 hits and every player in the Raiders’ starting lineup had at least one hit.

But Sonora made six errors behind losing starter Scott Oxarart (6-7). Oxarart allowed nine runs, six of them earned.
