SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Mater Dei Tops Mission Viejo on Tie-Breaker

Mater Dei and Mission Viejo high schools played to a 9-9 tie in sets and the games were even at 65-65, but the Monarchs won the tie-breaker, 4-2, to take the Southern Section 4-A first-round boys’ tennis match Tuesday at Mater Dei.
Adam Peterson, Jason Harnett, Adam Jarrett and the doubles team of Doug Bettencourt and Chris Stearns won in the tie-breakers for Mater Dei.
Peterson had won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, Harnett, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Jarrett, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1, as Mater Dei swept singles. Mission Viejo swept the doubles.
In other 4-A matches:
Corona del Mar 17, Santa Ana Valley 1--David Bain won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and Jamie Katzman won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, in singles and all three doubles teams swept for host Corona del Mar (19-2).
University 18, Long Beach Poly 0--Matt Greville and Noam Duzman swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for University (14-5) at Long Beach Poly.
La Quinta 9, Fullerton 9 (La Quinta wins on games, 77-70)--La Quinta’s No. 3 singles player Leandro Jajan defeated Fullerton’s No. 2 Ron Hartshorn, 6-1, to clinch the victory at La Quinta.
In 3-A matches:
Woodbridge 18, Rubidoux 0--Chris Emery won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Rajan Saggar won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, in singles for top-seeded Woodbridge (17-3). Victor Ro and Darren Isaacman won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Brett Isaacman and Reza Nilforoushan won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, in doubles.
Esperanza 10, North Torrance 8--Mike Burgess won, 7-5, to clinch the match for host Esperanza (17-3). Dan Harris and Jim Stewart won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, and Tony Lio and Eric Matsuo won, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles for Esperanza.
Laguna Beach 15, Cerritos 3--Jon Leach won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 54-0 for host Laguna Beach (16-5). Kirner (47-1) won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
El Dorado 12, Bolsa Grande 6--Matt Huddleston won, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Jeff Bailes and Sherman Hsieh won, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2, for host El Dorado (16-5).
In the 2-A division:
Valencia 14, El Monte 4--Danny Yu won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, Ryan Takenaga won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Robert Bae won, 7-5, 6-0, 6-1, for host Valencia (19-2).
