WORLD IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : Drug Lord Protests Murder Accusation

Pablo Escobar, chief of Colombia’s Medellin drug cartel, wrote a letter to police to try to turn aside authorities’ accusation that he ordered the murder of leftist presidential candidate Carlos Pizarro Leongomez aboard a commercial airline flight last week. “I have always been a good friend of almost all of the leaders of the M-19 (rebel band),” Escobar’s letter said. Pizarro was an M-19 leader who abandoned guerrilla warfare and became a presidential candidate.
