World IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Holocaust Day Marked by Jews

Flags were lowered and cafes and restaurants closed their doors as Israelis began marking the most tragic event in Jewish history--the loss of 6 million lives at the hands of the Nazis in World War II. A 1961 law orders all places of entertainment closed for Holocaust Day. This year, the holiday carries a unique meaning for Israel because of renewed ties with Eastern Europe.
