New Biodegradable Plastic Is Waterproof: United-Guardian Inc., Hauppauge, N.Y., says it has developed a new plastic that can be used as a coating for paper and non-woven cloth--including bags, diapers and sanitary napkins--but that can disintegrate when exposed to such severe surroundings as wet soil or garbage in a landfill. SheerSkin, as the clear film is dubbed, is promoted as an alternative to such plastics as polyethylene and polypropylene, which do not degrade in a dark dump.
