With the graduation of all-time state scoring leader Tracy Murray, this was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Glendora basketball team.
But the Tartans surpassed expectations.
Behind exceptional outside shooting, Glendora built an early lead and held on for a 64-58 victory over Compton in the Southern Section 4-AA Division final Thursday night at UC Irvine’s Bren Center.
It was the first division title for Glendora (26-5), which was second in the 4-AA last season.
Glendora built a 32-19 lead late in the second quarter behind the three-point shooting of Adam Jacobsen and Randy Rubio. But after a 36-29 halftime advantage, Glendora struggled to the victory.
Compton (22-7), making its first appearance in a Southern Section final since 1969, closed to 50-46 at the end of the third quarter.
The Tarbabes took their only lead of the half, 58-57, on a basket by Darnell Patterson with 1:55 left.
But Rubio hit a three-pointer with 50 seconds left to put Glendora ahead to stay, 60-58.
Jacobsen, a freshman, had 17 points for Glendora.
