KILLER MUD: The Bluebird Canyon landslide in Laguna Beach destroyed 22 homes in 1978 (N1). . . . But Orange County’s biggest death toll came in 1969 from a much smaller slide that struck only one building. Mud rushing down the steep slopes of Silverado Canyon pushed into a fire station, where residents had taken shelter from flooding. The toll: 5 dead, 17 injured.
