CAMP DAVID, Md. — President Bush on Sunday telephoned condolences to the family of Hyman Schachtel, a rabbi who was a source of great inspiration to the President, the White House said.
Bush spokesman John Herrick said that the President, during his weekend here at the retreat in the Catoctin Mountains, spoke with Schachtel’s widow, Barbara, and expressed his sorrow over the rabbi’s death Friday in Houston.
Schachtel, 82, was rabbi emeritus of the Beth Israel congregation in Houston. His funeral was Sunday in Beth Israel Temple.
