Bradley Urges Suit to Block New Prison
Mayor Tom Bradley on Tuesday urged that the Los Angeles City Council authorize the city attorney to file a lawsuit to block the construction of a state prison on the city’s Eastside.
Angered by the concentration of jail space in the downtown area, Los Angeles City Council members Gloria Molina and Richard Alatorre have scheduled a vote on the proposed litigation for today.
After a five-year fight against strong community opposition, state officials last month approved construction of the new prison on a 20-acre industrial site near Washington Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue. The medium-security facility will house 1,450 inmates.
